I think online video has great potential in libraries as training tools for both staff and public. Handouts and procedures are often either too simplistic or too hard to comprehend easily.
Watching short clips lets you take the information in easily and can be supported by the handouts or procedures. I’m not sure about quality. Is it better to have something up as long as it gets your point across? So many things that we see look so professional I would be embarrassed to put anything up that I produced as it wouldn’t look very good…..
How could we use it in libraries?
The 3 obvious option are to
1. promote services by creating short introductions/training clips
2. promote books via book trailers
3. promote our events by posting past ones.
eg:
Book trailers would be a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI used to work in a high school library, and we played various book trailers on a loop on one of the computer screens. This generated a lot of interest in the books being promoted.
they are very good ideas you have!
ReplyDeleteSome very good ideas there, and I,m sure anything you produced would be fine as you are communicating with customers and staff on a daily basis explaining and teaching people from all walks of life, and this would just be an extention of that.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas. More ways to promote our service and our books.
ReplyDeleteI think quality is important. If the the first impression a client receives of our library service is via a video then it should be professional and positive.
ReplyDeleteIf creating videos is something you would like to pursue, ask for training in that area.
I think people are more forgiving on quality if the content is useful. When I look for diy information on youtube, I'm looking for a video that will answer all my questions, not for a slick product.
ReplyDeleteOh I think professionalism is really important in a training video, I'm sure we could get
ReplyDeleteJohn Cleese to help!
I lov the idea of book trailers.
ReplyDeleteI think the training videos is a good one we are putting more info on our online catalogues so to be able to show people just what they can access is a great idea.
